I have this book sitting among my collection of Persephones and will now move it a bit further up the pile to be read. In a used bookstore,I once came across and bought a lovely, slim book by Duff Cooper called Sergeant Shakespeare in which during WWI he thinks about how Shakespeare depicted soldiers in his plays and concludes that Shakespeare surely must have been a soldier himself (during those unaccounted years where he disappears from the biographers' investigations).

Welcome to Juxtabook, Blythe Spirit. I haven't come across Sergeant Shakespeare - thank you for that.

Waaaaaahhhh, I left the Duff Cooper diaries in the Oxfam shop the other day, I knew I wanted them and now I want them yesterday and will have to hope they are still there tomorrow!
