(Pictured: Anne Hughes, Her Boke - now £6 - First published in Farmers’ Weekly in the 1930s. The writer under her pen name Jeanne Preston claimed to have had an original diary whether this was merely expanded or its existence was a fiction is not proved. It is however a lively and entertaining read, evoking country life in the late eighteenth century in an apparently plausible Herefordshire dialect. )
